Ah, Bless.....

Here's the part number, and Barrus are out of stock, although your local merc dealer should have one one the shelf. (there's one in me garage!)

Would say more like 30 hours if running in the top rev range

Yep Tony you were right prop fitted with metal flo torq. However guy has checked it out and reckons he can see absolutely nothing wrong with it. He says engine is set quite high and in his opinion it is definately cavitation, many thanks for advice, much appreciated.

You can make a small mark on the bush and prop before you go out on the water. When it's still "in-line" afterwards, you don't have a problem with the bush.

some nice Flo torq hub pics and info ->

Thanks for that tip mate. I see on another thread you were talking about fitting solid venthole plugs to try and reduce your cavitation problems, this has been suggested to me so just wondered how you got on with them and if they are worth a go

Send a message via AIM to Burty
after reading all your comments i'd go out again as it is and make sure you trim in all the way before trying to accellerate hard when off the plane

So the 280 is a pretty aggressive motor, the ECU is of a very different type to previous versions. If you put a lot of fuel in the engine which you did by it not starting and cooling slightly so it dropped on the enrichment curve the engine will take a little time to catch back up as the fuelling will be way out but the engine is capable of using the excess fuel something a standard carb motor probably couldn't do and so will perform quite differently to what you are used to. So not wanting to hijack the thread but while the prop bush ideas are very relevant why do you guy's all use and recommend the laser props. Have they changed a lot over the years ? Is it just because they are a good "allrounder" because to be honest I always thought them pretty crap. I read time after time threads saying I only get 50mph yet there are loads of people recommending a pretty average propeller which isn't well suited to high heights or high power operation.

Hi Slybadger, I didn't found the time to test with the venthole plugs... to be honest they are still not delivered . My expectation is they will make a huuuugge difference !! But only at the start, once you are up to speed venthole plugs solid or empty make no difference.

Don't know how you did your prop selection. I give you my advice. My prop experience is very limited, but I can tell you this : it's very very important. "Try before you buy" is crucial. And in the end it all comes down to what you want and how pleased you are with the testresult : all round performance, towing a skier, good acceleration, good top end...

Fact : your Phantom 21 needs bowlift. This means you'll need a prop that gives bowlift. Absolutely no cleaver props as they give sternlift. Calculate your needed pitch and ask around what other people with P21 280's did... A lot depends on how much revs you allow your 280 to make...

- My Tempest Plus 25 could work fine on my P21 with 200hp, but as said I still have to test.
-I got also the advice a Mercury Fury prop is great and will surely outrun my Tempest on top end. I'dd probably will be able to turn a pitch 26 in my case... It only exists since beginning of 2008, but I've heard great things about it, from people how've tested it on a P21.
- You can also trie a good chopper prop. Friend of mine is absolutely happy with his chopper 26 on his Ring21 with 200hp. Immense difference. Fact is you have to learn how to drive it best, so experiment with the trim as Burty says. I'll try my friend's chopper on my P21 when have the chance...

Hope this helps
T.

We've had great success with cleavers over here on phantoms, especially in the rough, kept it really nice and level.

If you were feeling no "issues" before the flooding problem I can't see why a spun prop hub would be investigated and become suspect. I build many 280,260, Drags etc a month and according to the use and abuse as well as the oil used a recreational 280 "can" go 140 hours on a rebuild, more abuse and rpms the less time in between re ringing. I use a leak down tester on all coated sleeved 2.5 to determine ring/bore health. I go no more leak down % than 6 % on a race engines and 8-10% on recreational ones.. IMO Top pinning is a MUST on all the 2.5 engines and I find that Wizards pistons are FAR better than OEM's and rings for rebuilds are 1/2 price as OEM parts.

Marking the prop barrel as well as the hub and make a test run to see if there is movement is a great suggestion...

Cheers,
Jay

That's the first time I've heard of this... but OK, my experience is limited and I'll be happy to test a cleaver some day

I had good results with a trophy plus 23P on a 2.5 280, it's a good allround prop, if you want a good high end top speed, you will need a chopper
