It was Cowes in 2000. Iain Sanderson and Paul Scott driving Martin Fishers 19 Phantom that they had hired for the weekend.
The boat had been damaged at the previous round in Ramsgate where Martin had stuffed it and hit the bottom, damaging the main stringers. Allegedly Steve Baker refused to repair it cos it was f**ked, but Martin managed to get someone to patch it up. It was certainly f**ked when it left Cowes!! Iain and Paul were both taken to hospital but thankfully were released with just cuts and bruises. Certainly brings it home to you what can happen.

And I remember you saying that! It was definitely spooky out there - mostly calm with odd wakes that almost appeared from nowhere - and at mid seventies in an XR2 powered Phantom 18 having big lumps of water appear in front of the boat is wasn't nice!

They didn't make an XR2 in the mid seventies!

You gonna enter this race then, or what?

Oh dear, I really need to sharpen my concentration, as my wit is either going way over, or more likely, way under, peoples heads.

Oh dear.
OK, I was trying to be funny with a play on words, but it clearly failed....so.
To the best of my knowledge, the the 175 V6 'Black Max' came out in 1976 on blue band. (crank rated. prop rating was 150)
first 150 XR2 came out in 1985/6 with clamshell cowel and was rated at 162hp. (prop rated)
1st XR2 'sport' came out in about 1988/9 with the flimsey lift off cowel, not sure of power.
XR2 sport with 2.5 based block (with thicker sleeves) was I think late 1989/90 and rated at 192hp
Sure I'll get corrected, but that's how I remember it.

According to This page, I'm wrong, the 175 'Black Max' came out in 1977.
But this switch box listing says they run from '76, so who knows, or cares.

I think we all felt that way Derek. I was relieved when they stopped it. 3 hospitalised, one boat wrecked and a second badly damaged. I had Colin Bowler in with me (mental Micky`s navigator) and even he was glad to see the red flag.
