Bow tank Question
I have recently bought a R20 which has a bow tank. This is the first boat i have had which has a bow tank, which means i have very little knowladge in the use of a bow tank.
(pic 1)I asume the pipe coming out of the tank (closest to the bow) to the side of the hull is to empty the tank and the pipe closest is to fill the tank up as this goes to a pick up at the stern?
(pic 2) This looks as though it has a mechanisem that lowers by the handle in pic 3 and i guess this is to pick up water?
(pic 3)
(pic 4)On the direction controller there is 3 buttons only 1 of which seems to work the other 2 are not pt+t as that is on the steering wheel.
When the switch on the direction controller is flicked water came out the hole in the bottom of the stern in pic 5, could this be where the bow tank empties and the hole at the bow on the hull be the bildge pump?
(pic 5)
Also the plate that is bolted to the bottom of the stern is that there for any real reason.
Cheers

the pipe at the front of the tank is to let the excess water out when the tank is full, ive never seen a plate like that at the stern of the boat

The pipe at the front is a vent, to let the air, then the excess water out.
Mike used to use a simple ball valve between the front seats to empty the tank.
The plate at the rear is probably there to fill in the missing bit of running surface. One of the 20 designs had a huge notch, that didn't work!

What's the section of the transom built out where the engine is bolted on?
Looks a bit strange, take it is has been added and not out of the factory like that.

Mostly, although he has experimented with notches, steps etc. I had a 20 with a notched transom, circa 82 and it worked really well, but one of his models was a bit of a disaster, and he only built a few of them.

By looking at it my boat looks as though it has a notched transom, this boat is a 91 model though. With my luck i have 1 of the few that where a disaster lol thats why the bit is added on? Or maybe its one of his experiments? But the bottom of the hull isnt flat the V follows all the way through to the back. I too have never seen something like that bolted on either, im guessing as said earlier its there to fill in the missing bit of hull.
Thanks anyway guys i have a clearer picture of the bow tank now

Bonwitcos (a local to us open fishing boat) and some of the newer small Ribs have a similar arrangement at the transom - it gives you a bit more waterline length for more pitch stability - the Opposite of a notch!

Not if that's what the boat needs! It's a bit like having a stationary trim tab, so you always have the drag there of extra running surface as well.

That boat must be some kind of a one-off. 1991 was 20C / 20D territory and it sure ain't one of those. Are you sure it's a Ring? The serial no. will be glassed in under the windsreen if it is.

Hi Carl
Treat the bow tank with a little respect until you get used to it as it will tend to make the boat steer from the front a little and easier to hook on a fast turn, and nose dive in a following sea, but it will give a much inproved water surface for a skier, I used to have a Ring 21 with two 2.4 EFI offshore Mercs on it in F1 Ski Racing and even on flat water i needed a little in the bow tank to settle the hull, or the boat was a right handful but you won't have that problem.

Im not even sure it works i push the handle and the scoop dosnt go down, think its siezed as the last owner never used it and never took the boat over 40 in the 6 years he owned it.

It's probably the 33c morse cable that has siezed as the pickup is stainless may even be the control box that the cables go into but either is not a big job to put right

Fixed it, it was the stainlees steel pick up rubbing too tight on the rubber seals in the hole it goes through on the extension piece, just gave the rubber seals a bit of a shave now works perfect

Plate on back.
Trimmed out and taking a wide sweep around a turn buoy with your skier behind your boat you would skim into a 90 degree, the plate was added to give you your grip back, cookies answer was about right.
