The Megalodon build

I thought it was a about time I got some pics up of my Ring 21C, that we're re-rigging and racing in the Guernsey Basics, as well as being a tidy leisure boat for mucking about in and disturbing the peace of our islands

Here's how she looked when my mate bought her over last summer, with a 225 opti. He took the motor off and put it on 'Here on Business', the blue P21, and I bought the rest from him.

I squeezed it in my workshop to re-rig it with my 200, and get it ready to get through scrutineering. The wiring was a complete mess so it's all been ripped out to do it from scratch.

My brother made up a perspex dash panel, wrapped in satin black vinyl, to house my fuel and water pressure gauges, and all the switches. I've got a matching 5" monster 8k tacho which will be housed in a stainless pod to the right of the wheel.

We've taken off the lifter, plugged the old holes and glassed them up (my dad's a boatbuilder which is handy!) and remounted it dead-centre. We're currently in the process of putting both trim pumps, tab pump, and battery all on the starboard side. My navigator is a fabricator at a local engineering company, so he's made up a big 6mm 75x75 stainless angle that runs across the top of the transom on the inside to spread the load of the top 3 lifter bolts. A plate has been welded to this to which we're going to mount the lifter and trim pump. He's also a moto-x racer currently recovering from a dislocated knee, all was going well until we went on the piss yesterday... We were due to go and get that job all finished up today, but his phone was off, turns out he was up A&E as he popped his knee out again after a few too many Jack n Cokes!

I managed to get my girlfriend to help out and clean up all the upholstery, it's come up a treat!

Here's a couple of pics of my cowl, with a custom graphic job again by my brother

Last pic for now is a photoshop of the name & number we're going to put on, complete with Scotty looking like a ponce on the bow to block the sun

I'll keep this thread updated as work progresses this week, I'm aiming to get her in at the weekend, although the busted knee might have buggered up that plan!

Cheers

The seal was on the cowl when I bought it, if you want I can get a photo of the end and you could try to find something similar? It's good as the part that fits on the tray has a metal insert, so it adds quite a lot of rigidity

He's in France for 2 weeks Steve, I'll ask him when he's back but he's pretty much retired now and just doing odd jobs here and there when he fancies it. He might be up for it though, I'll let you know

I thought Scotty's pose was a great mix of In the Navy and YMCA

Right time for an update.

Long story short - cooked the Merc, bought an HO 'Rude... Got it fired up today, still got a fair bit of rigging left to tidy up, mount the oil tank and she's good to go!

Nice cowl

Interesting jackplate, never seen one like that. Who made it? Got any close up pics of it?

Let us know how you get on with the etec

Hi all,
Porta products for the bracket,
awesome for shallow water but for race...?

carefull with it, it go up faster and higher than a classic jack
(keep eyes on engine temp & water pressure)
offset great for the prop

Your Megalodon with that rigging is a beautyfull toy
just sit down & enjoy at wot

Best regards

It is indeed a Porta Products lifter. I've set it up so that the top of it's travel (as in the photos) has the prop shaft just above the keel line. This should be around the highest I'll ever want to go, if it feels like it can go higher I'll just raise the motor a hole or 2. I'll never ever need to go all the way down, but just because the travel is there doesn't mean I have to use it all!

I'll be inspecting it carefully after each rough use, but I can't see a reason why it's not up to some hardcore use. The Etec is no heavier than the 225 opti that was on it before. Time will tell!

Hi Paul,
be kind with my "franglish"

I've got the same porta on my transom with a 200 etec (2,6l)
i'm fond of this bracket for many points:

gain of place/heigth adjustment/speed/trailing engine vertically

I allways keep water temp on i-com cause the porta travel faster
than i think...
You surely have a low water pick-up on the HO
i hav'nt and overheating is close when i go at 3500-4000 rpm
at wot it's better cold

Otherwhise, it's about jumps...big offset,
never asked Scott Porta about it.

And again:fine toy your Megalodon

Best regards

will try to send photos later
