Round Britain 2008

There's been some talk here & there about a proposed resurrection of the famed Round Britain Race, last run in 1984.

I've just received some info from Mike Lloyd (OldMan on Boatmad), who is to be the event director of the 2008 event.

Here's the info, incuding contact details, classes etc.

This will hopefully be an outstanding event, and go down in history in the way the last two did.

It's not often people stick their necks out and take on a mamouth organising job like this, so we need to really get behind Mike, and help it to be THE event of the 'noughties'.

Sounds like a great event. I've done a round britain over 10 days in a RIB with bowie knife clenched twixt my teeth and it was the best boating thing I've ever done. I'll watch with interest from afar.

The big "H" have got nothing to do with this one! We just thought that perhaps some of the Honda 225's might like a punt. If 111C think they can make it fuel wise then they are welcome. Let me know. The more the merrier. Certainly re-fuelling during each leg will be allowed if you want to splash and dash somewhere.

Sounds fantastic. My Dad and I have always fancied doing something spectacular before its too late for him to do it.

Will definatly look at getting a boat together for it.

Just another point on 111C. The rule of the race is that ALL boats have to be 25ft and over and able to maintain a mininum of 30kts. Also we will not be allowing full canopied boats to take part whether that's Class 1, ProVee or anything else. If your boat is full canopied then the top will have to come off. You can't flip your boat in the Irish sea 50 miles from nowhere and expect the rescue boys to get to you to pull you out within a few minutes as they did at Littlehampton this year. So all canopied boats will have to be open top to allow you to get out in a hurry. Also all boats will have to be carrying the appropriate liferaft plus everything else to keep you safe until the chopper turns up. Safety for all crews in this race will be paramount as far as we are concerned. We have got as Safety Officer one of the best in the business, Richard Salaman. More about that later.

Looks good!

Shame to miss out the top of Scotland. Racing round Cape Wrath would really separate the men from the boys. Maybe the RIBs could skip the Cally Canal and really go round Britain!

To be honest, I don't really know why the 'top bit' is missed out.

As this is a race, rather than a record attempt, the boats effectively do ten 200 odd mile races over about as many days. this means there has to be a scheduled stop, not unlike a regular race pit area for all the boats at the appropriate distances. Could it be that suitable places to set this up are in short supply 'on the top'?

It's the same course that was done back in '84 too, so there may be some historical reason.

It's a combination of a time, distance, historic and safety thing really. We are already on twelve days which looks as though it might go out to thirteen because of other venues wanting us to come in and visit. And then there is the "bash" before and after the event! Most teams can just about squeeze two weeks away from work, wives, families etc etc. Asking them to do another two days would not be very considerate and also add considerably to the expense, in my view. And the teams last time were pretty exhausted at the end of the 1984 race. Then there is the safety factor. This is already proving a major logistic problem which obviously has been solved before but to add to that would make life very difficult indeed let alone teams broken down in heavy seas off the northern tip of Scotland with no where to go. Sorry, no thanks, it's all tough enough as it is and the teams safety is paramount. It's all still one hell of a racing challenge though.

Will the race definatly go ahead ? We dont want to go to the expense of buying and rigging a boat for the event to be cancelled at the last minute due to lack of interest.

It will go ahead providing we get the sponsorship we need which is what we are working on right now. Could take a month or two to pin down.

If you went Oban/Scrabster/Dundee that would actually save a day against the planned route.

Although it's a shame not to be going right round Britain, I actually reckon it's a good call to cut the corner. Cape Wrath to the Pentland Firth is the area where there is probably most chance of conditions simply being too bad to race, which would seriously put a spanner in the works. The canal's a good excuse for a couple of lay days too.

If time is a limiting factor though, why spend a day going round the Isle of Man?

I think that the Isle of Man paid a lump sum for the boys to do it. Great for crowd and media appeal at the time. Might not have the time to do it this time round as other venues are calling. Some of the legs are looking like being possibly around 230 miles, it's no more than a Cowes-Torquay-Cowes non stop I suppose.
